Irrational Thinking!

How Irrational Thinking Influences Our Lives and How We Can Change It

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes feel anxious, sad or angry for no apparent reason? Or why certain situations keep triggering the same negative reactions? Your inner world of thoughts plays a decisive role in this process. This post shows you how your way of thinking influences your emotions and actions, and how you can regain control over your thoughts.

Thoughts as the origin of our emotions and actions

Our thoughts shape our emotions and determine how we act. The key lies in the way our brain interprets experiences. This interpretation happens in a flash, based on our previous experiences and beliefs. Often, however, unconscious, irrational thinking patterns lead us to misjudge situations, which results in inappropriate emotional reactions.

The problem of automated thinking processes

Our brain is a master of efficiency. It processes information so quickly that we often don’t notice the underlying thoughts. These unconscious thinking patterns, however, can have negative effects:

  • Irrational beliefs: Many of our core beliefs come from other people, without us ever having questioned whether they’re true.
  • Misguided interpretations: A situation may be neutral, but our thoughts judge it negatively, which leads to stress or anxiety.

The good news: thoughts can be changed!

A central aspect of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is the insight that we can consciously notice and change our thoughts. This takes practice, but it offers the possibility of transforming not only our emotions but also our behaviour and, ultimately, our lives.

Understanding emotions: can they be trusted?

There are two common views about emotions:

  • “You should always listen to your feelings.”
  • “Feelings are irrational and unreliable.”

Both views are wrong. Emotions are neither “right” nor “wrong” – they are reactions to our thoughts. For example, we’re not unhappy because we lack something, but because we’re thinking about the fact that we lack it. This insight shows how powerfully our thoughts shape our emotional world.

The path to change: consciously noticing and re-evaluating thoughts

The process of changing thoughts can look like this:

  1. Recognise the emotion: Become aware of how you’re feeling.
  2. Identify the thought: Ask yourself which thought triggered this feeling.
  3. Change the thought: Look at the situation from a different perspective.
  4. Transform the emotion: New thoughts lead to new feelings.

An example: A small mishap, like setting the handle of a coffee pot alight, could be embarrassing. But the same situation can also be seen with humour, which leads to a positive emotional reaction. It’s the perspective that makes the difference.

Why it’s worth changing your way of thinking

Changing our thoughts has far-reaching effects:

  • Emotional stability: We feel less overwhelmed by negative emotions.
  • Conscious decisions: Our actions are based on rational considerations instead of impulsive reactions.
  • Quality of life: Our results – whether at work, in relationships or personally – improve.

Conclusion

Our thoughts determine how we feel, decide and act. By learning to question and change our thinking patterns, we can lead a more fulfilled and conscious life. It’s time to regain control over our thoughts and use the power of our own thinking to shape our lives for the better.
