How Thoughts Shape Our Lives

How Thoughts Shape Our Lives – A Path to Change

Your thoughts are powerful – they influence not only your emotions but also your behaviour and, ultimately, the results you achieve in your life. But how does this process work, and how can you actively use it to lead a more fulfilled life? As a coach specialising in emotional balance, burnout prevention and high sensitivity, I’d like to bring this connection closer to you and show you how you can shape your thoughts consciously.

The power of thoughts

The basic principle of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) states: thoughts create emotions, and emotions influence our behaviour. Your thoughts are the foundation of what you feel and how you act. Often these processes happen so quickly that you don’t even notice them. Negatively tinged thoughts in particular can pull you into a spiral of unpleasant emotions and unwanted behaviours.

Understanding emotions

Emotions are neither right nor wrong; they are simply your body’s reaction to thoughts. If you believe, for example, that you’ve lost something important, you feel sadness. But it isn’t the loss itself that triggers this emotion – it’s the thought of it.

An example: imagine you long for something you don’t have. The feeling of frustration or sadness doesn’t arise from the fact that you don’t possess it, but from thinking about it. Without that thought – say, when you’re distracted – you could even be happy.

Consciously changing your thoughts

The key to change lies in consciously noticing your thoughts and questioning them. An effective process for this could look like this:

  1. Recognise your emotions: Are you feeling sad, anxious or frustrated right now? Pause for a moment and check in with yourself.
  2. Identify the thought: Which thought triggered this feeling? Is it rational, or unconsciously coloured by negativity?
  3. Change the thought: Deliberately choose a different perspective. Could there be a positive way of looking at the situation?
  4. Transform your emotions: Observe how your feelings change when you change your thoughts.

The path to positive results

Your thoughts influence not only your emotions but also your decisions and actions. The sum of these actions determines the results in your life – whether in relationships, at work or in your personal growth. By changing your thoughts, you can change your life.

Practical tips for your everyday life

  1. Keep a journal: Write down your thoughts and feelings every day. This creates clarity.
  2. Breathe consciously: Breathing exercises help you stay calm in stressful moments and sort out your thoughts.
  3. Practise self-compassion: Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn to speak to yourself with kindness.
  4. Seek support: A coach can help you recognise deeply rooted thinking patterns and show you new paths.
