What Is Power Posing?

Power Posing: How Your Posture Strengthens Your Self-Confidence

Do you know that feeling of being unsure or nervous before an important conversation, a presentation or a challenge? Often it’s not just the words we say or the thoughts buzzing around in our heads that shape how we come across and how we feel – it’s also our posture. This is where the concept of power posing comes in.

What is power posing?

Power posing is a technique based on the idea that certain body postures can influence our self-confidence and our stress levels. The term became well known through the research of social psychologist Amy Cuddy, who showed how we can influence our inner attitude through deliberate “power poses”. These poses are open, expansive postures that radiate dominance, strength and control.

Examples of power poses:

  • The winner: Stand with your arms stretched out wide, as if you’ve just won a race.
  • The superhero pose: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your hands on your hips.
  • The boss seat: Lean back in a chair in a relaxed way with your arms outstretched, taking up plenty of space.

How does power posing work?

The idea behind power posing is that our body influences our thoughts – and vice versa. If we want to appear confident, we can “trick” our brain through our body. In their studies, Amy Cuddy and her team showed that after just two minutes of power posing, people:

  • Felt a greater sense of self-confidence.
  • Showed lower stress hormones (such as cortisol) and higher levels of the dominance hormone testosterone.
  • Were perceived more positively, for example in job interviews.

Even though later studies called the biochemical results into question, one central insight remained: presenting yourself in a strong posture can lead you to feel stronger yourself.

When and how do you use power posing?

  1. Before a challenge: Whether it’s a job interview, an important speech or a difficult phone call – take two minutes to strike a power pose.
  2. In everyday life: Build deliberate, upright postures into your daily routine. If you often sit at a desk, for example, try not to slump but to sit in an open, present way.
  3. As a morning ritual: Start the day with a superhero pose in front of the mirror. This can be a great boost for your mood and your self-confidence.

Power posing in everyday life: a self-experiment

Give it a try: the next time you feel unsure of yourself, step away for a moment, take a deep breath and strike a power pose. Notice how your inner attitude changes. It may feel unfamiliar at first, but over time it becomes a habit – and can bring about a subtle but noticeable change in the way you come across.

A critical look

While power posing can be a useful tool, it’s important to note that self-confidence doesn’t come from body postures alone. It’s an interplay of inner work, positive experiences and a conscious engagement with our fears and goals. But power posing can be a first step towards showing up more boldly and feeling better.

Conclusion: small posture, big impact

Power posing is a simple but effective technique that can help us radiate more self-confidence and presence. Even though it’s no miracle cure, it can be a valuable tool in the toolbox for personal development and emotional strength. Why not give it a try and see how it changes your everyday life?
